Glucosamine is a substance found in connective tissue, cartilage and synovial fluid.

What is glucosamine sulfate?

Glucosamine can be found in the form of glucosamine sulfate and is often used to support joint health, particularly in the treatment of osteoarthritis. It is a natural substance, present in the human body. It is one of the components required for the formation that covers the ends of the bones in the joints.

Where can it be extracted from?

Glucosamine is generally extracted from the shells of crustaceans such as shrimps, crabs and lobsters, although synthetic versions are also available. It is often combined with chondroitin, another substance found in cartilage.

Glucosamine supplementation

Glucosamine supplements are commonly used by osteoarthritis sufferers to relieve joint pain and reduce inflammation. Glucosamine is thought to help slow the breakdown of existing cartilage.

Glucosamine sulfate is the most commonly used form of glucosamine in dietary supplements. It is glucosamine combined with a sulfate ion. Glucosamine sulfate is considered the most stable and bioavailable form, meaning it is better absorbed by the body.
